"Far out shootout recap " | Choice of Two / OIFC | 05/19/13

Headed out Friday morning in the rough weather since I had my Daughters birthday on Saturday.. It was bumpy that morning but we managed to make about 30kts straight into the seas headed towards the scarp ... We arrived about 8:10 and the water was not what we wanted to see with mostly a king green/grey look to it and cold .. We set our spread out with little rewards until around 9 when we boated out first dolphin on the long line with a black orange jack o lantern.. Wasn't long after we boated another , the action stayed steady for an hour or so and then slowed .. We switched gears and put the wahoo stuff out and worked every number I had from the scarp to 500ft back into the mcmarlen hole with only a couple I knock downs and a tuna  . Around noon we had a fish hit the port rigger and thought we had a wahoo but Ended up being about a. 20lb  king which we released !

Trolled ballyhoo till 1 and kept coming over huge pods of bait that made me think there had to be fish here if we could just make them bite... Switched gears again and tried to get the wahoo angry with a 15knt high speed lure trolled by him .. We put  out the black Bart's and fishfinders high speed rigs  and finished out the day high speeding with no love .... We gave it everything we had to catch that wahoo thinking that would be the most weight if we could get one .. Oh we'll we had a great day on the water ended up with 6 mahi tuna, , jigged up some jacks and a king mackerel .. Thanks to the Oifc and gps store for putting on the tournament .. and thanks to wes at anglers for all the help getting the boat set up etc..I was glad we were in the cape horn that morning its a heck of a fishing boat .

""Jack 'O Lantern"" | Real-Time Update | 05/19/13

We got lines in at the 100-400 area at 8:00 Saturday, leaving from Matt Dowdy's Moore Street dock about 5:45AM. Many boats were already there; the grass lines were thick with bait, and Eric Dowdy soon caught two good-sized Mahi. About 10:30, the downrigger let loose on my new "Jack 'O Lantern" (orange/black) with Select Ballyhoo, and another fight was on. With the reel spooling out, we had to chase this one down, and finally saw a large Wahoo. After one more run seeing the boat, I gaffed him right in the head, and the final battle began - boating the monster at 44.5 lbs. We fished a bit longer with nothing boated, and headed back in on Matt's 22' Cobia. It was Matt's first Wahoo and his brother's first Mahi, so we all had a blast and want to go again soon! "Picking at them" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 05/18/13

The inshore has been red hot if you happen to be in the right spot. Other wise it has been hunting/fishing trip. We have managed to find a couple of nice schools of reds and a few keeper flounder. So with all the big Dolphin and wahoo being caught  don't forget us inshore fishermen.

"Today is Last Day to Get in Shoot Out" | OIFC | 05/17/13

So far we have 8 boats entered into the tournament.  6 of 8 are in the High Rollers TWT.   There will be a little money to be won.  BUT, the big deal is that the tournament has turned like years past -- there is one boat fishing today (Choice of Two/OIFC) and the remaining boats will all be fishing together on Saturday- like old times.

Entry remains open. Come join in the competition.  I think there will be a lot of boats in the Stream tomorrow and I'm hoping more will choose to join the Shoot Out to be in the tournament.  Base entry is $350 with optional TWT's.  Bragging rights are priceless.

CLICK HERE TO BE AT ENTRY PAGE

Good luck to all this weekend.  Finally some good weather.  We have 2 boats in the Stream today and I've talked to some friends fishing along the beach who report acres of Menhaden and Bluefish outside the inlets.  Capt OC caught Kings at the 90s on Weds in bad weather.  I bet they bite good there this Saturday and Sunday.  It is finally time to enjoy being a fisherman.  We hope to see you at the OIFC.

Boats from the Shoot Out will be weighin in between 6 and 7pm on Saturday.  Come by and check it out.

"Update" | OIFC | 05/17/13

I just talked to Capt. OC in the Stream.  He is 5 miles West of the 100/400 in scattered grass and catching good Mahi.  He reports 75 degree water, 3-4' seas.  Both OIFC boats are in the Stream and will be back around 6.

"Freshwater Report" | Tiberias - 22' | 05/17/13

Seth Williams, age 7, caught his first fish last weekend at Lake Waccamaw, NC.  Seth hooked this 3.2 lb brim on a brim buster given to him by his grandfather, Wayne Williamson.  Seth is from Ocean Isle Beach and is the son of Michael and Shawna Williams. He attends Union Elementary and is in the first grade. This is definitely what you call beginners luck.

O'Dell Williamson Jr. also landed a monster largemouth bass last week.

"Shoot Out update" | OIFC | 05/17/13

Currently we have 12 boats in the 2013 Far Out Shoot Out.  1 boat has fished thus far, Choice of Two/OIFC - posting a 16.5lb Dolphin and 6lb Blackfin.  The remaining boats are fishing on Saturday.  Lines are out at 4pm, so most boats will return to the OIFC docks between 6-7pm.  It should be a show.  Stay tuned.  Who knows, even I may finally make it back on the water.  I am hoping.

"100/400 Produces" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/17/13

Our Cat Boats, staffed by Captain Chris, Capt. Steele and Captain Derrick fished the 100/400 today and struck gold.  The captains caught most of their fish around 1 to 2 pm in 80 degree water on skirted balleyhoo.  Caught were mahi and cobia.  On the way back they dropped lines for some bottom fishing at the 18 Fathom Wreck where they caught some amberjacks.

On the charter were Donnell Lawson, John Rolley, Keith Williams, John Mitchell, Kenny Grimes, Darrell Pelt, Bobby Fryer, Monderick King, Curlee Wingate, and Hector Velazquez who caught the biggest fish of the day.

Tomorrow should prove to be just as exciting.

"Black Gold-Yellowfin" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/16/13

One of the OIFC's newest employees who is Mrs. Anita's "Girl Friday" is with Jordan Williamson, and several other friends aboard Don's Yellowfin "Black Gold" in the Bahamas.  The group left Florida aboard the Yellowfin and headed to the Bahamas for some relaxation and fishing.  Here is Liz's report:

Second day here and we are already catching fish! We went out about ten miles from Hope Town Light House. Today we caught three Dolphins and a Yellow Fin Tuna. I have attached some pictures and the GoPro took some good video. They are heading out tomorrow in hopes of catching a Marlin.

See ya Soon!

"Far Out Shoot Out" | OIFC | 05/16/13

Looks like a classic Saturday shoot out for FOSO as weather looks ideal for Saturday to go to the stream. The winds have kept everyone inshore this week so should be game on Saturday. The fish are there, time to go get them. Come join us for a chance to join a great competition for local bragging rights.

"Sea Bass" | OIFC | 05/16/13

At the South Atlantic Fed meeting they did what was expected and almost tripled the allowable catch. However we hoped they would immediately open the seaon but they didn't and it is still a June 1 open. The further hope is with the significantly increased ACL the season will be able to be extended for a full season. Haven't been able to get the story behind the story yet, but will post when I get it.
