"Citation COBIA" | Real-Time Update | 06/01/13

Captain Steele said on the dock yesterday, "Terry you must be living right, catching all these fish." It does seem kind of strange, since Captain William Parker was simply trying to catch some Pogeys just West of the Shallotte Buoy. There they were, two large Cobia milling around the Menhadin. I grabbed my offshore spinner, attached a Pogey, pitched the bait, set the hook, and the fight was on. This big guy didn't want to come to the boat, so we had to tussle for a while, but patience prevailed, and Captain William gaffed him. I just finished eating some freshly cooked Cobia, the first of the year. It looks like everyone is catching them, and no matter what you are fishing for, you can certainly be on the lookout for these fish. Be ready! We have the right lures and hooks at OIFC; come and get'em. After running some Pogeys at the 390's to see if any Kings were around, we got tired of catching those irritating Dog Sharks; we moved in closer, and then we started catching a bunch of Spanish, especially at the mouth of Lockwood Folly Inlet. Captain William loves some Spanish! We had another good day on the water, and it didn't cost us a full month's retirement check! Dr. T reporting for OIFC

"Capt Brant Cobia Jog is Back!" | Real-Time Update | 05/31/13

We sold out twice but they are back again. These jigs have been producing a ton of cobia. And the cobia bite continues red hot. Dr Terry just weighed a 42 he and William Parker caught this am. They said a pair of Cobia came to the boat as they were netting Pogys. I have heard that more and more this year. The cobia are with the Pogy pods. Cast these jigs into the pods to hook up. Weather looking great again this weekend. See you on the water Sent from my iPhone

"2 Hour kids intro" | Real-Time Update | 05/31/13

The Nicholson family, 1st mate Captain Stan and I ventured out for a 2 hour kids intro trip. We picked at just enough Spanish mackerel for the Nicholson's to have dinner. Then pushed off the beach about a mile to tug on some sea bass and pin fish to finish our trip off. The Spanish mackerel are here and hungry. Book a trip and let's go fishing. -Capt. Derek

"Stick Slinger" | Do Work / OIFC | 05/31/13

Capt. Jim Bowen of the Stick Slinger sent us this report:

Capt. David Cutler and I were catching Cobia on Saturday morning, and decided to run and check out a few spots for kings.. we were in 47’ of water and running @ 45 mph and I saw something busting the water 3 times.. I stopped and in a matter of seconds, the Stick Slinger was wrapped up with a school of 50-75 huge Red Drum. They had some cobia mixed in I estimated @ 45-50lbs.. we pitched Pogies to the cobia but they kept getting inhaled by the reds. After catching and releasing 4 Reds, they were gone.. It was an awesome experience to share with my 9 yr. old and good friends..

"Widespread" | Hail Yeah / OIFC | 05/31/13

I got a chance to hop on board the infamous "Widespread"  with Nesbitt Noble, Eddie Julian and Gregory Lane on a grouper mission.  We loaded up with pogies on the west side of Shallotte Inlet in 12' of water and were on our way by 6:30 am.  Our goal was to see what was biting in 100' of water.  We tried several areas picking up a couple of scamps and feeding the 3-4 pound seabass.  Around 11:30 the bite picked up and we caught 7 more scamps and a gag.  The bite lasted about an hour and shut back down.  We did not see any kings, cobia or mahi and the scattered weed would make trolling difficult at best.

The good news for tomorrow is the opening of the seabass. The seabass were thick and it was hard to get a live bait passed them.  Seabass are a ton of fun to catch and a great way to introduce a kid to bottom fishing.  Stop by the store before you head offshore and be sure to pick up plenty of hooks, sinkers and squid.

Good luck

My charters the last few days have enjoyed catching several flounder. Yesterday morning yielded five keepers and the afternoon trip found 4 keepers. The fish are here and it is anyone's tournament to win. See ya on the water!

"Mahi" | Real-Time Update | 05/30/13

Capt. Derek and I headed offshore this morning with Mike.Seraffin in search of Mani. At 120 feet and 76 degree water we deployed our spread. Five minutes later the right long rigger bait was hit and the fight was on. About 30 minutes later we released a.30-35 lb jack. Not to be discouraged, we con tinued to work the area and were rewarded with a box of nice.mahi.

"kings and cobia" | Choice of Two / OIFC | 05/30/13

My wife and I went out today looking for kings and cobia or something to get our string tight. We found bait easily around hog inlet but went through 4 different pods looking for upgrades but they were all small baits. We headed out to around 70ft and set out the spread of double flounder bait pogies and it wasn't long before we had a cobia chasing it down..Shortly after a king skied on the flatline and took off.. My wife never saw the fish but heard it and said " now that's a king" we got it to the boat let her snap a picture with it and released it for another day.. We caught 2 cobia and 2 kings and a Spanish all of which were released other than the cobia .... Had a good time on the water with my beautiful wife and home by 4 clock to clean the fish ..

"Filming of OIFC No Limits Fishing TV Show" | OIFC | 05/30/13

Today I auditioned for the new TV program on ATMC "OIFC No Limits Fishing" staring Captains Brant & Barrett.  I'm not sure how the tryout went but I was told "Don't call us...we'll call you".

All was not lost though.  We had a blast catching several nice cobia and playing with amberjacks, and I took some pretty good pictures. Ya think we caught this cobia on a yellow buck tail tipped in squid.  Also if you have issues gaffing...use the Capt. Brant method and pull them in the boat by hand.

I've also posted some pretty cool videos on our Facebook page.

As always..keep the pics and reports coming to me at sunset69@atmc.net

"From Our Valued Friends" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 05/29/13

In the 1st and 2nd picture is Scott Hamilton and the 45lb Cobia, and 28lb and 20lb kings they caught  Sunday on Menhaden in 85ft of water.

From Dr. Jay Murphy....

I headed to the 100/400 with George Macon and our 10 year olds Daven and George for their first adventure offshore. We put lines in 4 miles inshore of numbers and the first and only line out was nailed within 30 seconds! First Mahi for the first 10 year old! It wasn't long before the other had his first. At one point we had 4 on and landed all 4 with the greenhorns handling the lines and gaffing by themselves, out of necessity! The craziest event of the day was seeing 5 birthday balloons drop straight out of the sky in front of us- crazy because it was my 10 year old's birthday weekend. We picked up the balloons and I realized the song "Happy Birthday" by Cracker was playing on the radio. AMAZING coincidence there! It was a great day for us dads and sons. Smoothest ride out and in ever for me. 12 Mahi in the box!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM THE OIFC!!!!!!

Ya'll keep your emails coming!!  You can senf the stories and pictures to me at sunset69@atmc.net
