"Brant update" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/02/12

Every day sees Brant 1000% better than the day before. He is blowing the Doc's mind with where he's at in the recovery process. A combination of his mental and physical toughness and the power of support from everyone out there is enpowering him to accelerate the recovery process. He's got surgery tomorrow on his right foot and then a couple more surgeries next week on his arm/wrist/elbow. From there it's off to the rehab hospital where I can assure you he will be cutting time off the estimated 6 weeks scheduled there. Brant is doing good. Thank you to everyone for your continued concern and support.

"NC Wildlife on the job!" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/02/12

I think it was yesterday I emailed Erik Christofferson at NC Wildlife that Brant would not be able to reset the buoys in Shallotte Inlet due to his injury. Less than 24 hours later I can report to you the NC Wildlife guys are here at OIB, on the job replacing the buoys lost in the heavy winds last week. That's a pretty amazing response time I'd say. Thanks go to Erik and his team at NC Wildlife [ erik.christofferson@ncwildlife.org ] .

"Beautiful Tuesday" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/01/12

When you look at the pictures of the fish our guests caught yesterday you will see how nice the weather was.  These fish were caught aboard the OIFC World Cat Captained by Chris Eckert with 1st Mate Derrick.  Look closely at the spanish a barracuda got a hold of.

"Just When.." | Get Busy | 08/01/12

Just when you started worrying about sharks a misguided 11 ft long alligator decides to wander on the beach at Holden Beach.

The 'gator said he was tired of playing golf so he thought he'd take a dip.

"Miricle Man & Fishing" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/31/12

Someone on the Ocean Isle Fishing Center Facebook page said "Get Well Miracle Man" in a message to Captain Brant.  That hit home especially after Camdyn and I visited him today.  To be as injured as Brant is he looks great.  His attitude is super and his strength is undeniable.  Brant will overcome and be back in action.  It may not be as soon as we want, but it will be faster than the doctors will believe.

Captain Amy is hanging strong and hanging at Brant's side.  She is as strong as Brant.  I think the Gales has kicked in.  There is a bond between the two that most people will never know.  Brant is fully aware of all the well wishes and is humbled by them.  Let's keep all the positive vibes going his way, it works.  His room is easy to spot.... it has a picture of a Yellowfin Capt. Steele put on the door.

Now for the fishing.  This reporter has fallen down on the job.  It's kinda like the wind was knocked out of my sails.  But I saw a couple of pictures 1st mate Derrick sent Brant of a trip he and Capt. Chris Eckert had today and there were several kings in it, as well as a part of a king that must have been hit by a shark.  I talked to Captain Chris Dew who told me that he and 1st mate Aaron had a good day too.  Hopefully I'll have pictures tomorrow.

That's all for the day.

"From Brant's Mom" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/30/12

From Bran't Mom:

Thanks for the outpouring of love and support following Brant's injuries. For those who don't know, last Tues., Brant fell 40' from a billboard he and Barrett were working on. He was flown to New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington. He had an 8 1/2 hr surgery on his pelvis last Wed. and a surgery on his left arm yesterday. There are other issues to deal with in the upcoming days. All... scans, head and body are clear of internal injuries. He can move everything although it hurts a lot. He's eating regular food, talking to all who visit (thanks, fishing world!), and was never sent to ICU! He has a long, long road ahead of him - but HE IS ALIVE - no brain damage, no spinal injuries. We have seen a miracle and are so very thankful. Amy has not left his side. The children have visited twice and taken it in stride. Barrett was with him and needs your prayers, too. Capt Brant is strong, in body and spirit, and we all know he will do everything to make a full recovery. But he's still my first- born - you know?

"Brant medical update" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/28/12

Yesterday saw Brant making alot of progress. He had a visit from his children Caroline and Brayden which was great for him. Amy is being Capt Amy and has the whole thing under complete control; from the IV to the nurses and docs, to the bed pan. She can and does, do it all. Today at noon he goes in for another round of extensive surgery, this time to attack his left arm, elbow, wrist which is in a similar condion as his leg/hip/pelvis was prior to that surgery. Also will do work on more breaks in toes/heel/ect. The Docs continue to be optomistic and have commented that they have never seen a patient with his degree of injury come back from where he was with such vengence. Brant is focused, committed and his iron will and sheer determination are already in high gear.

On another front, let me take this public opportunity to thank and commend the entire staff at OIFC for the incredible job they are all doing taking control of and keeping the OIFC ship sailing on. I've dropped by a couple times in last days, and although the jovial happy OIFC faces are not as prevailent, what you see if a focused committed look of absolute assumption of the job and committment to make Brant proud of them. If you are at OIFC, please give them a pat on the back. Thanks to everyone out there for your continuation of the power of support. Rube

"Last Few Backwater Trips..." | Tiberias - 22' | 07/28/12

Thanks to all of those that have fished with me this week. It has been an awesome redfish bite, with a few black drum and flounder in the mix. Live pogies have been easy to catch in the canals and have been getting hammered by the red drum and flounder. Live shrimp are getting eaten by both red drum and black drum. Catching plenty of shrimp to feed to the pinfish has gotten a little tough lately. The mullet minnows are steadily growing and plenty of good size ones are hanging in the cement canals. Deeper holes along the ICW have been producing most of the bites. The Little River Jetties has also been a hot spot when weather cooperates. Good luck out there and enjoy the pictures. Lots of fish released this week, so there is still plenty left out there. See ya on the water!

"Brant report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 07/27/12

On behalf of Brant and our entire family we thank you all for the incredible outpouring of concern and support expressed to us during this time of tradegy. Brant has survived a deadly accident, falling approx 50 feet off a billboard to the concrete driveway below. He has a multitude of serious injuries but everything internal is good. He endured a 8+ hour surgery Wednesday and following the surgery the Doctor told us the 1st key point would be if he could wiggle his toes the next morning. HE DID! And thus the recovery train has left the station. He has a long road in front of him, but those of you who know Brant, know him to be the toughest of the tough, both mentally and physically. We will keep everyone informed of his progress on our web site. I have let him know of the incredible outpouring of concern and support and he and we are humbled and so appreciative. This collective power gives us all strength...it works, and we thank you so much. Rube McMullan

"From the First to the Last" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/26/12

Doug Sr., Doug Jr., and Connor fished with me this morning. We caught fish on the first cast and the last cast. Doug Jr. caught a nice flounder on his first cast and Doug Sr. landed a nice 22"  red on his first cast. Before Connor could catch a fish Doug Jr. pulled out his so called lucky hat. The bite shut down! I moved to several locations before I threatened to throw the so called lucky hat into the water. LOL! Doug Jr. removed the hat and Connor landed a nice 22" fish. We worked on a few black drum and worked on the smaller reds for a while. I decided to check out an old hole that hasn't produced in a while, but you never know. The reds were there...good ones too! Doug Jr. had even pulled out that so called lucky hat. We worked on a school of reds between 24 and 27 inches landing close to a dozen. We ended the day with Connor landing a nice 26 incher to finish the day! Thank you guys for fishing with me! See ya on the water!

Yesterday Mr. Beane and his son Brett joined me in the morning. Brett landed an inshore grand slam and I am sure is still doing some trash talking. It is never fun getting beat, but being a Dad myself...there is nothing like seeing your son have a great time catching fish! I love it! Thank you guys! See ya on the water!

Yesterday afternoon the Massey group joined me and found some slab flounder! Alex, 14 years-old, landed a 4.2 flounder! Mr. Massey snagged another one that was just over 3 pounds and Jacob followed that up with a respectable 16 inch fish. Some great eating right there! Thanks for fishing we me guys! See ya on the water!

"Morning Trip" | Tiberias - 22' | 07/24/12

This morning's trip...Drew, Allister, and Jason joined me for a few hours in the backwater. We caught some short reds, big stingrays, black drum, flounder, and a beautiful 26+ inch red drum. As always I left the water wanting more, but considering the conditions not a bad morning. Of course, anyday on the water beats being stuck behind a desk! Thank you guys for fishing with us! See ya on the water!
