"Last Week's Action" | Tiberias - 22' | 02/10/13

Got out with my next door neighbor Pete and his buddy Ron last Monday. We headed to some nearshore structure in hopes of finding the elusive black sea bass. It did not take long to locate a large school of bass. We started bringing doubles, triples, and even quad hook ups to the boat. Using the larger sabiki rigs with no natural bait was doing the trick. All bass were released unharmed with the exception of the ocassional shark attack. As the sharks got more aggressive we changed our gear and targeted them. Whole pieces of squid on wire rewarded us with some line stretching excitment. Not bad for February!

On Wednesday I got out with my buddy on his new boat, "Penny Pincher". Joe is normally a kayak fisherman. Paddling may be a thing of the past now. We headed to some of his top secret kayak honey holes. Joe's new Sundance Skiff proves to get as shallow as his kayak. He loves it! The fish were also cooperating...we landed 8 or 9 reds with a nice trout in the mix. All reds were released to be caught another day. Again, the action is still pretty steady for February. The challenge is dodging the cold fronts picking the right weather day and the green cabbage is starting to grow thick along the oyster bars. Throwing light jigheads or weedless flutter hooks will keep you out of the cabbage. See ya on the water!

"Feds. Killing Red Snapper" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 02/09/13

Capt. Josh Hughes made us aware of this video showing the U.S. Government blowing up abandoned oil rigs in the Gulf and killing thousands of red snapper in the process.  You can click on this link or go to our Facebook page, Ocean Isle Fishing Center and watch it.

Please post your reaction in our comment section.

hope this get attention

Capt. Rickey 02/09/2013

I found the video to be shocking. This has caused a lot of harm to a lot of people, not to mention the useless killing of the snapper, as well as the destruction of valuable reef and deaths to other sea life.

Congratulations Capt Stan Gurganus for re-passing his Capt license test. Capt Stan was the OIFCs original inshore guide, but "a real job" pulled him away. He let his license lapse, but now he has gone through the class and passed again. I am hoping to have Capt Stan rejoin the OIFC this season, but this time he wants to focus on offshore. I'm sure you will be hearing more from Capt Stan- good job. I may have also forgotten to mention that recently our former first mate Derek Trefinger also passed his test, and he is now a licensed Capt. He will rejoin the OIFC charter crew this year as a Captain- great job guys!

"Isla Mujeres" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 02/08/13

This report was sent in for all of us to enjoy by Douglas Montgomery...Thanks!!

Hey Fishing Report readers... just wanted to share our big day!
My wife Tammy and I fished about 20 miles of the coast of Isla Mujeres the last week of January. I read the sails had been really hot late in the Afternoon. So I did something I had never done before. I booked an afternoon charter. It was torture!!!!!...we laid at the pool all morning as I watched the frigate's diving on Spanish sardines!!!....well it paid off. We left at 1pm and were hooked up on our first sail by 2:30. We fished till dark (about 6pm) and never had one second that we weren't hooked up on a sail. It was truly the most amazing thing I have ever seen. They were as think on top of the water as the Bonita's are here in the late summer!!!!!...our final count was 12 sails on 16 hookups!!!!!...

Just figured it may bring some smiles to the faces of everybody out there with the February blues.

We had to leave Key West before the tournament awards, but Brayden finally got his 1st place Jr plaque. He took it to school this AM after sleeping with it last night. He asked me when we could go fish another tournament so he could win a trophy. It warms my heart. Caroline got her plaque too but the first thing she asked was if there was in prize money with it?

Capt. Brant 02/07/2013

He has left every toy he has taken to school, but not this trophy. It is back in his room on the dresser. New personal goal/motivation: do good in tournaments so my children can win trophys; forget all the money it takes, the reward is well worth it!

"Stick Slinger's Sail" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 02/05/13

Capt. Jim Bowen FINALLY got some great pictures of a fishing trip he took a few weeks ago to us. In Capt. Jim's defense, his computer crashed and he lost my email address. The tuna was caught by Dr Mike Cahn from Whiteville. The sail fish was caught and released by John Currin from Henderson. Biggest sail I have ever seen..
For some reason I could not get the pictures to format for the Fishing Report.  So...if you'd like to see a great sail fish check out our Facebook page!!

Name that fish? Caught a few of these today in Key West. They were coming up to the chum on the reef line and we were floating small chunks of chum to them on light tackle. They are about 5 lbs and have sharp teeth. Who knows what kind of fish they are? Post to comments.

Thanks guys. Looks like the answer is Bermuda Chub. Normally Rube will eat anything that comes out of the ocean and in a pinch he's been known to our bait straight out of the bait well (true story). Sounds like the right decision was made to release these guys. I'd never seen one. They were great on light tackle.

Neal Cartrette 02/04/2013

Bermuda Chub. Fun to catch, but no good to eat and can make a nasty mess in a boat.

Ryan Powers 02/04/2013

Bermuda Chubs. No good to eat and they chew on your baits while you are yellow tailing.

"OIFHC" | Get Busy | 02/02/13

The wind is still blowing and the "Get Busy" is still getting some much needed TLC. So what else to do but load up the trucks for some upland bird hunting. Ned Gerber invited Daniel Simmons, State grouper record holder Tim Gillimore, Coastal Carolina Constructions Jeremy Ridenhour and Myself up to Harrells to shoot some birds. With a couple of bird dogs and a pointer/retriever/border collie named "Buck" some of us got in some great shooting. Others not so much. Well alot of shooting just not alot of hitting. But at least no Dick Chenney moments it was a fun time. Thanks again Ned.

"55 lb Wahoo" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 02/02/13

In an earlier post I mentioned Wendell Barnett's 55 lb wahoo he and Tom Cushman landed near the Scarp (if I remember right) this week.  Judging by the horizon the seas may have been a little "bumpy"

Thanks for the report and the picture.

"Rodeo" | Get Busy | 01/31/13

We haven't forgot the Rodeo prize money and trophies...We have had a set back in getting the trophies.  Please bear with us.  Speaking of the Rodeo. we've met and discussed the 2013 Rodeo with the intention of getting more people involved.  Remember, we don't make a dime on the Rodeo..it's 100% for your enjoyment.  We are also talking about a flounder tournament similar to the trout tournament.  There will be more to come.

Help us spread our Facebook Page around by sharing things with your friends.  I posted this tonight..Now is a great time to review our fishing reports to see what was biting when, where and on what. It's simple to go through the archives. Besides I don't have a lot of action to report on except the store crew is busy rearranging and getting in new stock..March 16th, the Spring Kick Off is not that far off.

And don't forget our comment section on the Fishing Report.

"Choice of Two" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 01/29/13

Corey Bellamy submitted the following report....

We fished about 10 miles inshore of 100/400 and went 2 for 8 today on wahoo .. The bite was hot just couldn't keep them on the lines ...

In an exclusive interview with Corey, he indicated  that if he's had my main man Eddy Jones with him today he coulda landed most of them but Eddy chose to sleep in "like a little girl" ..

By the way..The Choice of Two stands for the choice of two prime seafood restaurants in Calabash..Ella's and Beck's seafood (no relation to this humble reporter).  Sadly Beck's burned a few months ago.  But on a positive note rebuilding is underway and they should be open for the season!!!

Thanks Corey, and FYI Eddy made it out of bed and to Crossfit getting in shape for the king season.

"Top Secret Colors!" | Tiberias - 22' | 01/29/13

We got'em! Two of the hottest trout and redfish colors. Pink has always been a favorite color with the old timers. It has proven itself time after time. The dirty water around Little River, Shallotte River, and Lockwood Folly River are some of the best places to give this color a try. Grey ghost is a new color all together. I have perosnally picked this one out myself from a large selection of colors Bass Assassin offers. I expect great things from this color in the near future. Our water is extremely clear in places and this should fit the bill! See ya on the water!
