"Myrtle Beach Sun Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/25/10

I have had many folks congratulate team "Do Work" on our winning  the Jolly Mon.  On behalf of the "Do Work" crew, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Also thanks to Captain Brant and the OIFC for putting on these tournaments, for their fine products and sharing their knowledge, not only with the "Do Work" crew but everyone.

Several have asked for the details of our catch.  The Myrtle Beach Sun News has a great article that describes everything better than I can.  This weeks Fisherman's Post also has a very good write up, but for some reason my link to it has been unsuccessful. Again, thank you very much and see you at the OIFC.

Be sure to check out the Jolly Mon Racing Team in action at Myrtle Beach Speedway July 4th weekend!

"Sailfish" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/24/10

Captain Chris Dew and 1st Mate Aaron Dew fished with Joe Salmon, Paul Allmon and Harold Mantooth of Rome, Ga. today.  They were drilled by a sailfish while pulling a dead cigar minnow with a blue and white skirt 50 feet behind the boat at the AR445.  Harold Mantooth fought the sail for 1hr and 10 minutes before getting him to the boat.  The sailfish was promptly released, healthy, and swam away to fight another day.

Check out these pictures.....

"Today's Action" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/23/10

I was fortunate enough to go with Jamie Miliken, owner of Jolly Mon Racing to some race shops in the High Point area today.  As such I wasn't around when I boats came in but was told they caught kings and mahi.

But the story of the day came from Corey Bellamy.  Corey sent me this picture of a 58 lb king caught today VERY close to shore by some folks who were shark fishing.  Corey said they using Boston Mackerel as bait.

I am sooooo glad they weren't in the Jolly Mon.

The picture quality is not top notch, but it's clear enough to show this magnanimous king!

"1st Mate Material" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/22/10

Monday Captain Zach Faulkner and the OIFC's Sydney Hooks headed to the high seas for a few hours fishing aboard Zach's 36 ft Contender the "Get Floor'd".  They brought home a nice king and a tiny mahi...:-(.  Not bad for a couple of hours and Sydney's first off shore fishin' mission.

Zach said Sydney has great potential as a 1st mate.  Wonder why Zach would say a thing like that?

"Teacher's Pet" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/22/10

Captain Jeff Wiliamson reported that he had a blast fishing with Mat and Ashley Abernathy , school teachers from High Point out on summer break and vacationing at OIB.  They caught some over sized South Carolina red fish and 2 hand fulls of Tubbs Inlet flounder.  If you want to catch fish in shore or off shore, Captain Jeff is the one to hook up with.  Even if you don't catch much you will definitely have fun!!!

"Gray Goose" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/22/10

Miss Virginia Beckham sent me this picture of a couple of mahi  caught a couple of days ago while fishing with her dad Henry, and friends Tommy and Jennifer Gray, as well as Jennifer's boyfriend Josh aboard the Gray Goose out of OIB.

Henry and Virginia are mostly known for their inshore fishing, but as can be seen they have skills offshore as well.  Folks may remember Virgina from when she worked at the OIFC last summer.

Also pictured is a sail fish the crew of the Gray Goose landed.  Virginia said the sail swam happily away after Henry put it back in the water....you've got to know Virginia to love her like we do.

"Jolly Mon Report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 06/21/10

Congratulations to all of you who made the leaderboard. An impressive field of 306 boats competed for this year's right to stand on the stage and hold the first place trophy and check. That is a lot of boats and making the leader board in any position is an accomplishment. First place honors this year go to Jeff Beck, father Rickey Beck, John Hayes and Timmy Clemmons aboard the Ocean Isle Beach based Do Work fishing team. The team weighed a 33.65 pound King they caught Sunday just after noon while fishing near the Cape Fear sea buoy. The King reportedly hit a double Pogy in the propwash. There will be more to come with a report on the entire weekend's events. For now to get all results in all divisions- CLICK HERE

"Jolly Mon " | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/21/10

Another Jolly Mon is in the books.  307 boats competed in the event and we were blessed withe great weather for the Tournament.  The staff of the OIFC put on quite an event.  The food served by Guy C. Lee and Captain Amy was excellent.

Team "Do Work", fishing out of Ocean Isle was the winner.  The team consisting of Captain Jeff Beck, Timmy Clemmons, Jon Hayes and myself were the victors.  They also won a TWT, I was was awarded 1st place in the Senior Division.

The winning fish was caught in the river channel, using live pogies on a double pogey rig.  Jon Haves was the angler and fought the king fow about 45 minutes.  Jeff was the coach,  gaffer and planner..

The Do Work team won in the neighborhood of $22,000.  Winning the money is great of course.  The prestige of winning the Jolly Mon as as important.  Winning the Jolly Mon while fishing with my son on Father's Day was most important.

Thanks to Captain Brant, the OIFC, all the sponsors, fishermen and all the people who followed the tournament.

I would like to announce that I have been granted exclusive rights to interview myself later this week.  This will not be a softball interview, I am preparing some hard hitting questions to ask myself and I expect some truthful answers from me.

"Spanish vs. King" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/20/10

If the Kings were only the same quality as the Spanish have been this year...we would have seen some monster Kings weighed in at the Jolly Mon...Oh wait! We did! Capt. Jeff Beck and crew represented the OIFC in fashion with a 33.65 lb. taking first place and top bragging rights until next year. Congratulations! Below are some Spanish that have been holding on the tide lines outside the Shalloute inlet. I suspect some nice Kings are near this area as well. Just haven't pulled the right bait in front of them yet. Work'n on it though...See ya on the water!

Day one of the Jolly Mon weigh-in is in the history books and is on it's way to the Brunswick County Library for safe keeping.  There were about 207 boats fishing today.  The heaviest fish so far is 31.60 lbs.

Come join us Sunday for the weigh-in and later for a great meal, once again prepared by the Jolly Mon staff, and then the awards banquet.  I've included all of the random pictures I took today.  If you see a picture you like and would like for me to email it to you, send us a email with a brief description of the picture and we'll be happy to send it to you.

A big thank you from the OIFC for participating in and enjoying the Jolly Mon.

"Jolly Mon Fishing Report" | OIFC 1- 36' | 06/18/10

There were A LOT of boats fishing today and they were catching fish at A  LOT of locations.  Most of the boats I saw and heard were catching a fair amount of kings and small mahi.  The biggest king caught in the Jr. Jolly Mon weighed 24+ lbs.

There is no secrete location where the fish are holding...the 90's, Christina's, 70 ft Hole, the Jungle...you name all the standard king fish locations and you'll find some kings at each location.

Here's a couple of pictures of 2 Jr. Jolly Mon participants in action.
