"Bottom Gold" | World Cat- 33' | 05/04/08

Captains Chris Burrows and Chris Dew took a charter group from Atlanta, Saturday, consisting of friends Alex, Tim, Tony, Aaron ,LJ and Lance on a bottom fishing mission. The picture shows some of their catch, which looks like a bottom fish buffet. After a very successful day of fishing and cleaning fish it was obvious that Chris and Chris earned their money!!!

"1st In" | OIFC 1- 36' | 05/04/08

A tired Gary Sheaff was the 1st offshore boat to return to the OIFC dock. Gary and his crew consisting ofShawn Baker, Hoyt Housand and Warren Sinclair fished the Black Jack aboard Gary's Grady White. Gary reported that he got into a heavy Wahoo bite and also filled a fish box with Dolphin, several of which he described as gaffers. The store was busy and Gary was tired, with a boatload of fish to clean so I didn't take any pictures.

"OIFC Rodeo" | Speckulator - 22' | 05/04/08

Contratulations to Brandon "Bone Crusher" Sauls for improving his lead in the OIFC Rodeo with his tournament winning, citation 8.3 lb. trout. To add insult to injury Brandon increased his lead in the Rodeo over Kyle and Jeff by winning Kyles' own tournament. When asked if he'd like to say anything, Bone Crusher just pointed to his fish bag. I guess that says it all. The inshore guys have one heck of a competition going. Its time for the offshore anglers to start weighing is some Dolphin, Wahoo, and King. They were hot this weekend!!!

"Spring Inshore Classic Results" | Speckulator - 22' | 05/03/08

The 2008 Spring Inshore Classic is now in the books. I would personally like to thank everyone that fished this year, because without you guys we obviously wouldn't have a tournament. 18 boats entered this year, and in the end, Ronnie Spangler, of Lawndale, NC emerged as this year's overall champion with a aggregate weight of 4.5lbs. (3.4lb. Trout + 1.1lb. Flounder). Ken Jacobs of Laurinburg, NC placed 1st in the flounder division with a 2.0lber. The top junior angler prize was shared by Noah Quaintance and Alex Mercer with a 2.7lb. Trout. The top lady angler was Heather quaintance, also with a 2.7lb. trout. However, the real story of the tournament was this year's 1st place trout, which was caught by none other than Capt. Brandon Sauls on the Bone Crusher. As the weigh - in began, the word on the docks was that the Bone Crusher was on the way with yet another gator trout. Well, Brandon and teammate William Southard didn't dispoint anyone, especially when they pulled a sow 8.30lb. trout out on their bag and put her on the scale. That fish couldn't have been caught by a more deserving team, because you would be hard pressed to find anyone who works harder prior to a tournament than these guys. However, there is one matter on which I have to set the record straight. The word on the docks this evening was that this fish (the 8.3lber)set both a new tournament record and a new overall OIFC record. Unfortunately for Brandon, his fish wasn't quite big enough to topple these two records, which are held by none other than yours truly, with the 8.55lber I caught during this tournament in 2006, when Clay Morphis was the director. All jokes aside, thanks again to everyone who fished. Below are the full results for the tournament. Also, the word I got from all the fishermen was that the trout bite was very good today, as was the flounder bite, only that many of the flounder were undersized. I be on the water tommorrow, so I'll let you know tommorrow night how it turns out. Overall (1 Flounder + 1 Trout) 1st - Ronnie Spangler - 3.4 Trout + 1.1 Flounder = 4.5 TTL 2nd - Clay Morphis - 1.15 Trout + 1.7 Flounder = 2.85 TTL 3rd - David Hooks - .75 Trout + 1.0 Flounder = 1.75 TTL Trout 1st - Brandon Sauls - 8.3 2nd - Robert Hughes - 3.7 3rd - Adam Sellers - 3.6 4th - Ronnie Spangler - 3.4 5th - Mike Fields - 3.15 Flounder 1st - Ken Jacobs - 2.00 2nd - Clay Morphis - 1.7 3rd - Ronnie Spangler - 1.1 4th - David Hooks - 1.0 Top Junior Angler Noah Quaintance & Alex Mercer - 2.7 Trout Top Lady Angler Heather Quaintance - 2.7 Trout

"King Beach Bite" | OIFC 1- 36' | 05/03/08

Prepare for an all out red alert King beach bite Monday and Tuesday. A cold front comes thru waters Sunday evening pushing wind to north. Almost typical classic fall conditions. It should go off in Myrtle Beach hot spots and around Yaupon area. This beach bite comes every year late April, early May, only last week or so, so don't miss out on this great opportunity to enjoy catching these smoker size Kings right on the beach, just like October. Also, remember, every 25+ pounder you catch and release will have the fish gods smiling on you when you need him in a tournament.

"More trailer update info" | OIFC 1- 36' | 05/02/08

Click on our "Political Issues" page and you will see copy of Resolution passed by Department of Transportation "asking" State Legislature to look at changing laws regarding towing boats. I spoke to Representative Stiller and he said this is VERY big, in terms of supporting his efforts at getting Legislation passed to change the rules. This will be a hot button issue when they go back in session in couple weeks and Rep Stiller is "on it". Having the DOT endorse the effort we have all put forth helps Rep Stiller and the other folks working on this. A lot of the credit goes to Lanny Wilson, DOT Board member for our area, as well as DOT Board member Mac Campbell[who has a home at Ocean Isle and is big king fisherman"Mack Daddy"] as well as all the DOT Board members who so aggressively sent their message to the Legislature. This is all very encouraging.

"Spanish are here, too!" | World Cat- 33' | 05/02/08

Just got the word from William Parker that the Spanish Mackerel have showed up, too.  He is between the AR460 and the Shallotte sea buoy and says he is catching all he wants.  Should be a good weekend for the frying pan, plus more of a bait buffet to draw those big smoker kings in.  All I can say is FINALLY!!!

"The kings are a chompin'" | World Cat- 33' | 05/02/08

Folks, it's official.  The kingfish have arrived on the Brunswick County beaches and they are hungry.  Apache, Cherry Grove, and Ocean Crest Piers have all confirmed kings over 24 pounds being caught in the last week.  The influx of bluefish (juvenile to giant) at the nearshore wrecks, artificial reefs, and other structure have got these smokers close to the beach and HUNGRY!  If you want to catch a citiation mackerel, now just may be the time.  A 3/4 day trip may just be the ticket.  Give us a ring at 910 575 FISH and we'll get you out after them.

"Come Watch!!" | OIFC 1- 36' | 05/02/08

This weekend's weather is predicted to be chamber of commerce perfect. We have several charters booked as well as Captain Kyle's Inshore Tournament. Come on over to the Fishing Center, bring the family and watch as the OIFC Charter Boats come in with their catches. The weather has been windy, fishermen have had work, so the fish ought to be starving and ready to be caught. Captain Kyle's weigh in will start in the afternoon, and our Gulf Stream boats will be coming to the docks between 6 and 7pm. Have an enjoyable time on our balcony, shopping the store, or at the G'Mack sipping the beverage of your choice and enjoy the weather and the activities. Hope to see you there!

"Big Trailer issue news!" | OIFC 1- 36' | 05/01/08

Through the efforts of Lanny Wilson, DOT Commissioner for Brunswick and New Hanover County, Mac Campbell, also a DOT Commissioner and homeowner at Ocean Isle[Mack Daddy King Mackerel Team], and the entire DOT Board, this morning the DOT passed a Resolution basically instructing the State Legislators that the DOT is on board 100% with efforts to change the boat trailering laws in our state. I will post the letter to our site[as soon as I can figure out how to], however last sentence reads: Now Therefore, it is resloved by the NC Board Of Transportation that the North Carolina General Assembly be advised of this body's request for a modification of any and all laws such that no special permit or specialized operations license be required to transport recreational and sport fishing vessels and that this body further supports laws making the transportation of said vessels as economic and convenient as is safely reasonable and in the public interest. This is BIG news, as what the DOT has done is given the Legislators the ammo they need to overcome any political opposition to the change to the laws regarding trailering boats. If you know any of the DOT members,or see Mack Daddy on the water, tell them thanks or point them to the pogies! Rube McMullan

"Pre - Tournament Report" | Speckulator - 22' | 04/30/08

Alright folks, the Spring Inshore Classic is coming up this weekend, which should give everyone the perfect excuse to get on the water and go fishing. The trout bite continues to be strong, with fish up to 6lbs being caught this past weekend. Also, the flounder were quite prevalent as well, and the bite seems to only be getting better as the water continues to warm. I feel that the key to winning this weekend is going to be to make sure that you catch both a trout and a flounder for the overall aggragte prize. Regardless of size of each, having both species we be very important. Registration will be from 3 - 8 p.m. on Friday, with dinner at 6 p.m. and the captains meeting at 8 p.m. Fishing hours will be from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, with the awards at approximately 5 p.m. So make plans to come down this weekend and fish with us!

"Lockwoods Folly Inlet" | World Cat- 33' | 04/28/08

I have recieved several phone calls today about the state of Lockwood Folly Inlet from concerned boaters out of the Holden Beach area.  I have heard of at least three instances of outboard boats running aground at mid-tide or less.  We are still awaiting dredging of that inlet.  The good news is that Shallotte Inlet is very passable, even at low tide.  There are two channels through Shallotte, one to the east and one to the west.  I ran the OIFC World Cat through at nearly dead low tide on Saturday and never marked less than 3.5 feet below the hull.  Certainly there are conditions where the inlet will be less than perfect, but at least we have one cut that we know we can get through.

"Smack Down" | Speckulator - 22' | 04/27/08

I finally was granted an exclusive interview with Brandon "Bone Crusher" Sauls today. The Bone Crusher is fresh off a win in Austin and Tripps Backwater Tournament. The focus of my interview was to get a response to the trash talked by Kyle "Speckulator" Hughes about the standings in the OIFC Year Around Rodeo. Bone Crusher's only comments were talk is talk, he'll let his fishing do the talking for him, and he intends to take Kyle's prize money in Kyle's own tournament this weekend. That would be the ultimate insult. I pride myself in just reporting the news...I report, you decide. My intention is not to create unhealthy competition, I just wanted to give Bone Crusher the opportunity to defend himself. It looks like the inshore guys have taken the lead in the "Rodeo". The offshore fishermen need to step up to the plate and get their competition going.

Captain Roger and First Mate Boston Rob took a Stream Charter today. Roger and Boston reported spotty grouper and dolphin action however they did manage to land some nice ones, and saved the day with a large catch of excellent sized sea bass. Roger feels the picking up annd expects great success on his next trip! You'll have to excuse me for the lack of details, but Clark Kent here was running late and fell down on the job.

You anglers who are also golfers should pay close attention to this picture. I kid you not, this picture is not a joke, it has not been doctored or anything else. The man who took this photo is a great friend of mine and lives on a green at Oyster Bay Golf Course. He keeps his camera trained on the green and took this shot. This may not be about salt water fishing, but it does give you something to think about if you are a golfer or enjoy fishing some of our many ponds. Check out the golf ball on his back..can you say mulligan?

"Next Boat" | OIFC 1- 36' | 04/26/08

Don Williamson, the Captain of the "Black Gold" Hydra Sport was the next up at the Fishing Center's scales. Don and his crew of his nephew, Chase, Bob Jordan and Amy Jordan put a citation Wahoo weighing 67.3 lbs on the OIFC scales. They were fishing the Winyah Scarp when they noticed a lot of bait fish jumping in the area. Soon after they slayed this great Wahoo. Skill was with them as Amy is the SKA Division 9 Lady Angler of the Year. Having talent as well as good looks on board paid off. Speaking of pay off...they were not entered in the OIFC Rodeo either. As expensive as fishing is this day and time, it would be worth the entry fee ($20 per species) to sign up for the Rodeo, it will probably be more helpful in covering your expenses than any politician could ever be, even in an election year.
